Today, Tamil superstar Ajith Kumar has completed 25 years in Indian cinema, and man, what a journey it has been. Ajith is one of the most popular stars in Tamil cinema, and his fan following can rival even the Khans in Bollywood. And the brilliant thing about the actor is that he has made it to the top without being from a star family. Ajith began his journey in Indian cinema 25 years ago around this time when he began shooting for his debut movie Prema Pusthakam which was in Telugu. He later made his debut in Tamil in the same year with Amaravathi. From there it has been a steady journey, as the actor first gained popularity a lover boy to gain superstardom being the masala hero. Currently, his fans are looking forward to watch his upcoming spy thriller, Vivegam on screen.
On the occasion of him completing 25 years, we look at 13 movies of his that we loved, and you vote as to which is your fave among these!
Ajith’s role as the cancer afflicted patient who forms a maternal bond with his nurse was one of his earliest critically acclaimed roles.
This love story, also featuring Devyani and Heera Rajgopal, cemented Ajith as a lover boy. It was later remade into Hindi as Sirf Tum.
Ajith excelled in his dual roles of a loving sibling and his creepy but mute twin who has hots for his sister-in-law.
The movie that changed Ajith’s life forever, as he met, fell in love and married his heroine, Shalini. And yeah, he was really good as the goon with the heart of gold.
While Ajith (or for the matter any of the male leads here) was never the focus of this adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, his romantic scenes with Tabu, aided by Rahman’s mesmerising score, are lovely to watch.
Playing goons with a heart of gold has always been Ajith’s forte as proved once again in this AR Murugadoss movie.
Another double role where Ajith was terrific as the vigilante who uses his handicapped brother’s identity to wreak vengeance on the villains.
Ajith is not done with playing multiple roles, as here’s another terrific portrayal by the actor in triple role. His portrayal as the effeminate dancer stands out, though, and the movie deservedly earned him Filmfare award for the Best Actor.
Ajith stylishly reprises Rajinikanth’s Billa and makes the role his own. He also did a sequel that also ended up being a blockbuster.
After two flops, Ajith returned to form and regained his superstardom, playing a complete grey character in this Venkat Prabhu movie. His one-liners and his confrontation scenes with Arjun Sarja are terrific.
In this non-linear thriller, Ajith was at his stylish best playing a mysterious man who places bombs at various places and using a reluctant hacker to help him. Rana Daggubati also appeared in the movie for a cameo.
An action thriller with a heart, this Gautham Menon movie had Ajith play an ex-cop and a single cop, who couldn’t escape the ghosts of his past.
Ajith’s last release was a typical massy affair, that may not have clicked with the critics but turned out to be a blockbuster with the masses.
So which of these is your fave?
