I-day on August 15 is an important date for India in general and Bollywood in particular. Given the fact that it is a holiday, there is a scramble to release films on that day. This year, we had Gold and Satyameva Jayate in Hindi films and Vijay Deverakonda’s Telugu film Geetha Govindam. Refreshingly, the makers of Vijay’s films decided to release a romantic comedy on August 15 and guess that did wonders for the film in Australia. The latter anyway is a huge market for South movies with Rangasthalam and Mersal making a killing there. But Geetha Govindam has managed to do something which is simply unbelievable. The film has managed to beat not just one but both the Hindi releases of I-day in Australia. The opening weekend score of Vijay’s film is more than the combined collections of Gold and SJ. Guess which Indian film has proven a tough opponent to #Gold and #SatyamevaJayate in Australia? Telugu film #GeethaGovindam, starring Vijay Deverakonda… The *combined* weekend biz of the two Hindi films [A$ 192,306] is less than that of #GeethaGovindam [A$ 202,266]. @comScore

Vijay has managed to create a really sound fan following after delivering back to back hits like Pelli Choopulu, Arjun Reddy and Mahanati. That has bolstered his prospects at the box office and you can see the results already.
